Seamless Solutions for Transformer Transport

The Challenge

A large-scale project commissioned by a leader in electrical and infrastructural projects in October 2024 required the transportation of four oversized transformers from Indonesia to Australia and New Zealand. The shipment involved one 33 MVA transformer to Fremantle (Australia), one 17 MVA transformer to Melbourne (Australia), and two 120 MVA transformers to Bluff (New Zealand). The organisation faced multiple challenges, including:

• Oversized cargo: The transformers were exceptionally large and heavy, with the largest units weighing 100 tonnes each, requiring specialised handling, permits, and precise coordination with authorities.
• Tight timeline: The project had a demanding schedule, necessitating prompt arrangements for a suitable breakbulk vessel.
• Regulatory approvals: Moving oversized cargo demanded special permits for transit through Jakarta and the destination ports in Australia and New Zealand.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, the project team implemented a series of strategic solutions:

• Breakbulk vessel charter: A suitable breakbulk vessel was chartered to transport the oversized transformers by sea safely.
• Regulatory coordination: Close collaboration with local authorities ensured all necessary permits were secured, minimising delays in the transportation process.
• Careful scheduling: A meticulous plan was developed to synchronise vessel departure, customs clearances, and local transport at each destination. This ensured all activities were executed within the tight timeline.
